The EU's new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force on 25 May 2018. Taking immediate effect in all EU/EEA states, it set new standards for data protection and security.
In Switzerland, the Federal Council submitted a draft revision of the Data Protection Act (DPL) to Parliament in 2017, designed to align the Act with EU standards. Companies consequently face enhanced documentation, intelligence and reporting obligations, which are associated with heavy criminal penalties for non-compliance. Internal processes have had to be adapted to meet the new requirements.
At this conference, Denis Boivin and Nicolas Duc invited Fribourg International members to compile a data processing register, sort and secure their data and respect people's rights. Denis Boivin is a qualified tax expert, partner, line director for tax and law products and executive board member of BDO. Doctor of law Nicolas Duc is a BDO partner and their head of tax and law products in French-speaking Switzerland.
